SUMI-E PAINTING

SUNDAY SESSION THREE

September 27th, 2026 1:30PM-3PM

Location:  Clements Noyes Art Gallery, 119 S. 9th Street Lincoln, NE

Learn the fine brush technique of Sumi-e while painting. Lynette will show brush holding and several stroke techniques for you to explore painting many forms of nature. Relax and explore beautiful Japanese artists' works for inspiration while you paint.

Sumi-e is a traditional Japanese form of brush painting that uses black ink on paper to capture the spirit of nature through simple, fast, and uncorrected strokes. The word "sumi" means black ink, and "e" means painting. It is closely tied to Zen Buddhism, treating each stroke as a form of meditation.

The Four Essential Tools

Artists use what are known as the "Four Treasures":

  • Brush (Fude): A natural-hair brush with a fine point that holds a lot of water and ink.
  • Ink (Sumi): A solid ink stick that the artist grinds with water on a stone.
  • Ink Stone (Suzuri): A heavy slate used to grind and mix the ink.
  • Paper (Washi): A soft, highly absorbent handmade rice paper.

The instructor will provide all materials and tools necessary to complete the painting experiences.
